10:00am-2:00pm Summit of Reginald Hill & White Shell Beach
Stay to your right and wander up Morningside road past the tiny post office. Enjoy the glimpses of Fulford Harbour and eclectic Salt Spring houses. Admire the harbour through a peaces sign carved in a fence. There is a beautiful white shell beach just near the top of Morningside. The trail to the beach cuts into the brush beside the black metal gate on the driveway for 205 Morningside Drive.
Morningside dead ends a few hundred meters past the shell beach entrance. Just before the road ends on your left you will see a gravel road with a wooden gate and a sign indicating private property & Reginald Hill. It’s okay to walk up the road to the trail head but you cannot take your car. If you do have a car you must park near the mailboxes you can see in front of you. Walk up the gravel road. When you get to the top of the hill you will see an orange marker nailed to a tree on your left.
There is also an orange arrow and a sign that has house numbers 152, 154 ad 156 on it. Turn left at this marker. Step over the chain and walk up the dirt road. Gradually the dirt road narrows. To your right, near the end of the trail, you will see an orange marker on a tree. This is the trail head. Follow the steep trail to the top. It will take about 30 minutes and unless you are very fit you will find the walk strenuous. The 180 views of Fulford Harbour, the entire Fulford Valley, Burgoyne Bay, Isabella Point and the San Juan Islands are well worth the effort. There is a grassy spot at the top that is perfect for a picnic.
2:00pm – 5:00pm Explore the Many Quaint Shops in Fulford Village
Start with Stuff & Nonsense. The colorful sign and lively porch displays are hard to miss, less then a city block up the main road. Jana Thomas, the owner & my sister, travels the world every ear to purchase unique artisan-made items to ensure a shopping experience you will not find elsewhere. The shop features a quirky but stylish mix of home accents, fine table linens, clothing & accessories, jewelry and countless items that are impossible to classify. This is a store you can spend hours exploring, so delightful you might purposefully miss your ferry.
Below Stuff & Nonsense, in the yellow house is Jambalaya with a beautiful collection of beads, jewelry, hats, purses and garden wares. Beside Rock Salt Restaurant is The Wardrobe with a large variety of eclectic women’s clothing and jewelry both new and used. Another shop you could loose a day in.
Wander up the road and explore Knotty Threads Fiber Arts Studio. The studio is home to Jane Mackenzie Designs where beautiful one of a kind silk scarves and shawls are hand woven. The studio also highlights the work of a rotating group of local artists.
